Setting up a dial up networking connection

The information displayed on this screen has been optimised for you to print.
This will explain how to connect to Pinnacle through Windows 95/98.
If your machine is connected to a local area network, check with the system administrator before continuing with these instructions. If you require a print out of this document, then PRINT SCREEN (or [CTRL+P] on a Macintosh).

Essential components

  1. Pinnacle Dial-Up User ID and Password
    (Please call 01903 524999 to order this, if you do not already have details)
  2. Correctly installed modem

Ensure that Dial-Up Networking has been installed.

  1. Double click My Computer
  2. Double click Control Panel
  3. Double click Add/Remove Programs
  4. Select the Windows Setup tab
  5. Select Communications
  6. Click the Details... button
  7. Check the Dial-Up Networking option if its not already checked
  8. Click OK
  9. Click on the Network icon in Control Panel. You need to Add a Client, an Adapter and a Protocol.
  10. The Client you add is Microsoft Networks
  11. The Adapter you add is Microsoft Dial-up Adapter
  12. The Protocol you add is Microsoft - select TCP/IP from the list offered. The default IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols can be removed if your not using them on a local area network, and you don't need a Service.
  13. Windows 95/98 will need to reboot after any changes

Setting up a Dial-Up Networking

  1. Double click My Computer
  2. Double click Dial-Up Networking
  3. Double click Make New Connection
    A help Wizard will now take you through the Dial Up Connection process
  4. Enter a friendly name for the connection i.e. Pinnacle click next
  5. Next, enter the connection phone number 0845 079 8774 ensure that the UK is selected in the country code, click next
  6. This wizard is now complete, now click OK
    Once the wizard is complete you will now be taken back to the Dial up networking box. You will see the recently created icon called pinnacle.
  7. Highlight you pinnacle Icon with one left mouse click and then click on your right button which should reveal a list of options, select properties
  8. Now a new box will appear, with four tabs, (This may be different in Windows 95), select the Server Types tab.
  9. Uncheck Log on to network
  10. Uncheck Enable Software Compression
  11. Check Enable software compression - select TCP/IP from the list offered. The default IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols can be removed if your not using them on a local area network, and you don't need a Service.
  12. Uncheck Log on to network
  13. Uncheck Require encrypted password
    In Allowed network protocols:
  14. Uncheck NetBEUI & IPX/SPX Compatible protocols leaving TCP/IP checked.
  15. Then click TCP/IP Settings...
  16. Check Server assigned IP addresses
  17. Check assigned name server addresses
  18. In the primary DNS enter 195.224.180.227
  19. In the secondary DNS enter 195.224.198.62
  20. Check vUse IP header compression
  21. Check Use Default Gateway on Remote Network Note: important check
  22. Click OK
  23. Click OK to finish the required edits

Using your Dial Up Connection

  1. Double click the new icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder
  2. a Connect to Pinnacle window will appear
  3. in the User Name box, type your login id e.g. UKPNN/pnnab76.
    NOTE: Please note the characters here and whether they are upper or lower case, this is important and is often a cause for the connection not being made.
    The first 4 characters are always upper case UKPNN, there then follows a / and then a 7 letter code starting with pnn but in lower case e.g. pnnab76).
  4. In the Password box, enter your Pinnacle Connection password ( Not necessarily the same as your email password).
  5. Ensure the telephone number is correct and then click Connect
  6. Your Computer will now try and connect
  7. To break the connection click on the Disconnect button

Trouble Shooting

 Make sure that you pay attention to the way the username/password is spelt, with the 'UKPNN' in upper case and 'pnnxxxx' & password in lower case.

Make sure that your settings look the same as the ones above, making sure that you put the appropriate phone number in and the correct username & password.
