Setting up a dial up networking connection The information displayed on this screen has been optimised for you to print.
This will explain how to connect to Pinnacle through Windows Millennium Edition.
If your machine is connected to a local area network, check with the system administrator before continuing with these instructions.

Essential components
- Pinnacle Dial-Up User ID and Password(Please call 01903 524999 to order this, if you do not already have details)
- Correctly installed modem
- Windows ME CD - in case you need to install Dial Up Networking
Is Dial-Up Networking installed?
- To check if Dial-Up Networking is installed, click on My Computer
- Double click Control Panel
- Can you see Dial-Up Networking? if not follow the instructions below
Installing Dial-up Networking
- Double click My Computer
- Double click Control Panel
- Double click Add/Remove Programs
- Select the Windows Setup tab
- Select Communications
- Place a check mark by Dial-Up Networking
- Click OK twice
- Your computer will start copying files, at this point it may prompt you for your ME CD. Your computer may be rebooted once the file transfer is complete.
Adding Networking Components
- Double click My Computer
- Double click Control Panel
- Double click Network
- Check to see if you have TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter installed
- If you do have this installed proceed to the next section, otherwise, follow these steps:
- Click the Add button
- Next, select Protocol then click Add
- A new window will now appear, on the left side in the manufacturers list select Microsoft. In the right side select TCP/IP, then click OK
- Now you will see TCP/IP listed under Network Components, click OK
The computer will now ask you to restart the machine.
Making A New Connection
- Click on Start then Settings, next select Dial-Up Networking
- Click on Make New Connection
- Type the name for the computer that you are dialling i.e. Pinnacle
- Make sure your modem is installed, check this by selecting Select a device
- Click Next
- In the next screen enter 0845 in the area code and 079 8774 in the phone number, also ensure that region is set to United Kingdom.
- Click Next
- In the next window you will see that you have successfully created a new connection, click Finish
- Highlight you pinnacle Icon with one left mouse click and then click on your right button which should reveal a list of options, select properties
- Now a new box will appear, with four tabs, (This may be different in Windows 95), select the Networking tab.
- Check Enable Software Compression
- Uncheck required Encrypted password
- Uncheck Record a log file for this connection - select TCP/IP from the list offered further down. The default IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols can be Uncheck
- Select TCP/IP Settings
- Check Server assigned IP addresses
- Check Specify name server addresses
- In the primary DNS enter 195.224.180.227
- In the secondary DNS enter 195.224.198.62
- Check vUse IP header compression
- Check Use Default Gateway on Remote Network Note: important check
- Click OK
- Next click on Security, enter your username: i.e. UKPNN/pnna.. and password, leaving the domain blank.
- Uncheck Log on to network
- Next click on the Dialling tab
- Check This is the default Internet Connection
- Check Disconnect when Connection may not be needed
- Click OK to finish the required edits
Using your Dial Up Connection
- Double click the new icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder
- a Connect to Pinnacle window will appear
- in the User Name box, type your login id e.g. UKPNN/pnnab76.
NOTE: Please note the characters here and whether they are upper or lower case, this is important and is often a cause for the connection not being made.
The first 4 characters are always upper case UKPNN, there then follows a / and then a 7 letter code starting with pnn but in lower case e.g. pnnab76). - In the Password box, enter your Pinnacle Connection password ( Not necessarily the same as your email password).
- Ensure the telephone number is correct and then click Connect
- Your Computer will now try and connect
- To break the connection click on the Disconnect button
Trouble Shooting
Make sure that you pay attention to the way the username/password is spelt, with the 'UKPNN' in upper case and 'pnnxxxx' & password in lower case.
Make sure that your settings look the same as the ones above, making sure that you put the appropriate phone number in and the correct username & password.
